The doors to our Upper School building open at 7:15 a.m.. Students can go to their lockers and begin preparation for the day. Homeroom begins at 7:30 a.m..
From 7:30-7:45 a.m. all students in grades 7 through 12 spend time with their house mates. SLC (Student Leadership Council) members lead devotions, practice for competitions, make announcements and help to maintain an atmosphere of encouragement for all.
The morning is divided into four, 50 minute periods. Math for all logic level students and all rhetoric level students is offered at the same time so that we can meet the needs of each individual.
For teenagers, time to relax and socialize is an absolute necessity. We have designed our lunch periods so that students can eat and then enjoy going to various clubs. Each club is sponsored by a teacher but run by the students. Clubs include cinematography, worship and robotics. Some students choose to play board or card games and some prefer going outside or to the gym to enjoy Frisbee or basketball. Wednesday is Chapel day and affords us a longer lunch time. On Wednesday each house eats together and works on upcoming competitions.
After lunch, fifth and sixth period are 50 minutes each. The day ends with the 7th period elective. Having the elective at the end of the day affords our athletes the chance to take part in our athletic program without missing an academic subject. Electives change from year to year but have included: Survival Skills, Yearbook, Visual Basic 1 and 2, Studio Art, Drama, Prep for Life, Wellness Walking and Innovation Lab.
Students are dismissed to their lockers at 2:40 p.m.. ECP(Extended Care Program) begins at 2:45 p.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. each school day. Students can use that time to work on Homework in the classroom or in the computer lab.
What’s that about?
We have several major competitions each year. There is a great deal of excitement to see which house will win! Competitions encompass academics, arts and athletics. Each house also has the responsibility of one major event.
Events and Competitions include:
The Annual Frisbee Tournament, A Christmas Caroling Contest, Honor Roll totals, Winter Formal, Wii Tournament, Box Tops competitions, Operation Christmas Child boxes, Family bonfire, Lion’s Den Coffee House, ACSI competitions (Math, Speech, Writing), Science Fair, Pi Day challenge, Field Day (low ropes course, volleyball).
All of the competitions lead to the presentation of the coveted “House Cup” at the Awards Assembly on the last day of school.
